ABSTRACT
Service is considered to be one of the essential technical elements in volleyball, “a fix moment” where the ball is sent back in the game. Its execution is exclusively determined by the player’s individual qualities, not by the actions of the co-players or those of the opponents. This is why special attention is given to service quality during training sessions.
Our study aims at analyzing, by the means of the statistical analysis, the efficiency of the point services within Penicilina Iași Volleyball feminine team, for the 2009-2010 season, in the A1 National Division. Our hypothesis for the present research claims that the efficiency of the services with scored points was greater during the games the team won, compared to the lost ones (we took into consideration the championship games, the play-off tournaments in the Romanian Cup, adding up to 34 games).
The results obtained confirm the initial assumption, given the fact that the efficiency of point services matched the Championship victories, both in the round and return matches; the lack of service efficiency reflected in the poor game results. For the 2009-2010 season, with very few exceptions, the victory of Penicilina Iași also meant the team’s superiority in service efficiency, as opposed to the opponent’s. The team’s efficiency in scored points represents, statistically, 7,69% of the points obtained by Penicilina Iași in competitions, number which could and must be improved in the future, through specific training.
We believe in the necessity of analyzing this technical element, in order to increase the awareness regarding the improvement of service efficiency and the negative consequences of service failure.
